Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian warned Meralco and other distribution utilities against possible “bill shock” after Metro Manila and other nearby provinces have reverted back to Moderate Enhanced Community Quarantine.
According to Gatchalian, chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy, Meralco should have learned its lesson during the Luzon-wide Enhanced Community Quarantine wherein its consumers complained of high surge in their electric bills.
Consumers may once again experience “bill shock” now that President Rodrigo Duterte has placed NCR back to MECQ for two weeks because of the ballooning number of confirmed CoVid19 cases.
Gatchalian insisted that during the Luzon-wide ECQ period, consumers were shocked with both the overestimate and underestimate monthly bills from Meralco and other distribution utilities.
In line with this, the senator is asking the Energy Regulatory Commission and Department of Energy to monitor all distribution utilities.
Gatchalian said that the ERC and DOE should make sure that all these companies are following the regulation set by both agencies in order to protect the consumers from experiencing questionable computation.
