Former PBA top player tasked to head men’s 3×3 team for FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament

The Samahan ng Basketbol ng Pilipinas announced on Thursday, January 8, the appointment of Mr. Ronaldo Magsanoc as head coach of GILAS Pilipinas 3×3 Men’s team for the FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

According to the said announcement, the 3×3 OQT will be held in New Delhi, India from March 18-22, 2020.

This isn’t the first time that Magsanoc will coach the Philippine team as he was also in-charge during the recently concluded South East Asian Games, hosted by the Philippines.

The 3×3 GILAS Pilipinas team with PBA players like Chris Newsome, Jason Perkins, Mo Tautuaa and CJ Perez took home the gold medal in the SEA Games.

Magsanoc also coached the 3×3 teams that participated in the 2018 FIBA 3×3 World Cup, the 2018 FIBA 3×3 Challenger and the 2018 FIBA 3×3 U23 World Cup.

20 teams from different countries will participate in the 3×3 OQT in India. They will be divided into four pools of five teams.

The Philippines will be part of Pool C together with Slovenia, France, Qatar and Dominican Republic.

Each pool will play a single round robin with the top two teams moving to the quarterfinals.

Knockout games will be played in the quarterfinals and semifinals to determine the OQT finalists.  The top three teams of the OQT will qualify to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics
