(UPDATE 5 at 9:01 a.m.) A fire of still undetermined origin hit the shopping center of the University of the Philippines campus on Laurel Avenue in Diliman, Quezon City Thursday morning, March 8.

The blaze that occurred in front of the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice and near the U.P. Infirmary on Apacible Street, started at 7:14 a.m.

The fire reached the second alarm at 7:36 a.m., according to the Metro Manila Development Authority, before it was declared under control at 8:20 a.m., DZRH’s Val Gonzales reported.

Firefighters rushed to the area to put out the blaze. As seen from the photos and videos uploaded via social media, the whole shopping area, home to about 30 food stalls, photocopying services, and computer and souvenir shops, was razed down by flames.

Rodic’s Diner, known for its tapsilog and longsilog meals, which was established in 1949 and is popular among U.P. students and alumni, has two branches in the center.

U.P. Chancellor Michael Tan expressed sadness over the incident, saying the old center, which was renovated last year, was considered as among the university’s landmarks.

Almost three years ago, on June 13, 2015, another food establishment inside the Diliman campus near the U.P. Palma Hall, was also struck by fire. CASAA (College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Association) Food Center was considered as also among the iconic establishments in the school.
