President Rodrigo Duterte revealed on Thursday that Bureau of Customs (BoC) Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon had asked to be removed from his post at least thrice already.
President Duterte made the revelation during his speech in Ozamiz City where he honored seven policemen who led the operation against the late Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr, his wife and 14 others.
As the president addressed the issue regarding the corruption in the agency he admitted his fault in appointing several BoC officials who became instruments in the smuggling of Php 6.4 billion worth of shabu from China.
“Hindi ko naman akalain, yang Bureau of Customs na yan, akala ko kaalyado ko. Pero si Faeldon is not the one. He is not that kind of person. Hindi ko siya dedepensahan. Si Faeldon has written me thrice, tulo, asking me to relieve him. Noon pa yan pag-umpisa pa yan” he said.
The president said he is convinced that the ongoing system of the BoC is rotten to its core, and that Commissioner Faeldon was only caught in the web of it.
“Sabi niya, ‘Hindi ko natupad ‘yung pangako ko sayo’ And he was right. Sabi niya, ‘Hindi ko na-control sir, hindi ko talaga kaya eh’ Eh because the Customs is—pagka X-rated pa hard core. It is corrupt to the core” the president said.
Commissioner Faledon has written the president three times asking to be relieved from duty as well as describing the elaborate system of illegal operations within the bureau.
In the letter, Faeldon also apologized to the president for not fulfilling his duty to clean up the anomalies within the BoC.
