FACT OR FAKE: Can sports activities resume in Metro Manila once under GCQ?

Based on the omnibus guidelines on the implementation of community quarantine in the Philippines issued by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF), sporting events and other forms of mass gathering will remain prohibited under general community quarantine.

However, the IATF will allow the conduct of outdoor non-contact sports, and other forms of exercise in said areas as long as people observe the minimum public health standards, including the wearing of face masks, the maintenance of social distancing protocols, and non-sharing of equipment.

The guidelines mentioned walking, jogging, running, biking, golf, swimming, tennis, badminton, equestrian, and skateboarding as among the sports activities, and exercises allowed in areas under general community quarantine.

Indoor non-contact sports and sporting events can resume in areas under modified general community quarantine.

The number of participants allowed in sporting events and other forms of mass gatherings, however, will be limited to only 50 percent of the venue capacity or seating capacity.
