The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, leading their semifinal playoffs 3-1, try grab the first finals berth when they meet the Petron Blaze Boosters in the 2014 Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup 8 p.m. Friday, February 7 at the Smart Araneta coliseum.
Rain or Shine will have to do it without head Coach Yeng Guiao, who was meted a one game suspension to go with a whopping P100,000 fine for his actions against league officials in Games 3 and 4 where he got ejected on technicals.
Despite Guiao’s ejection in the third period in Game 4 Rain or Shine still managed to post an 88-83 triumph over Petron Blaze last Monday with assistant coach Caloy Garcia handling the coaching chores.
Garcia will have to do the same again in Game 5 but this time he will have to call the shots for the entire game.
”It’s going to be different and tougher without Coach Yeng (Guiao) but hopefully we can continue where we left off and win another one for him and enter the finals,” said Garcia who was the team’s head coach before Guiao took over.
While the Elasto Painters are looking to book a ticket to the finals, the Blaze Boosters will do everything they can to extend the series and keep their campaign alive.
Petron center June Mar Fajardo submitted a double-double in Game 4 with 27 points and 17 rebounds but didn’t get enough support from his teammates as the Boosters fell short.
Rain or Shine made its last finals appearance in this same tournament last season where it got swept 4-0 by Talk ‘N Text.
Dating back to the elimination round, red hot Rain or Shine won 11 of its last 12 games including a franchise record 10 consecutive victories that was only snapped by Petron in Game 3.
