It might take time before the Commission of Appointments confirm Health Sec. Francisco Duque III for he still needs to explain on the controversies involving the national health agency.
Among these issues include the anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia and allegations regarding a mafia within the DOH.
According to Sen. Joseph ‘JV’ Ejercito, chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, they trust the abilities of Duque but the members of the CA Committee on Health needs to study the actions taken by the DOH secretary during these issues.
Sen. Richard Gordon, meanwhile, strongly believes that the appointment of Duque will be approved by the CA and that his confirmation should not be prolonged so that he can face the problems of the DOH.
Last January 31, Duque faced the CA but his appointment was deferred due to the questions on the said controversies, and in order to give three oppositors the chance to speak.
On October 2016, President Rodrigo Duterte named Duque as health secretary after the CA rejected the appointment of Paulyn Ubial.
Duque previously worked as DOH secretary and the chairman of the Philippine Service Commission under previous administations.
