The defending Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup champion Talk N Text Tropang Texters are reading and raring to defend their crown.
With the PBA second conference set to start in a week the Tropang Texters are rounding into competition form.
The Tropang Texters have figured in hard practices and are fine-tuning their game with exhibition matches against various basketball clubs including other PBA teams.
Talk N Text coach Jong Uichico said the Texters started preparations early after being eliminated by Rain or Shine in the Philippine Cup quarterfinals.
”We actually started preparing for the second conference at the start of the year. We just finished the Christmas season and we already started practicing,” said Uichico.
The Talk N Text mentor expressed confidence coming into the conference with his team’s preparation. He parades a team with a completely healthy line-up eager to defend their championship.
”Our preparation is going well and we have everyone back now so it’s just about getting better for us. Of course we want to win the championship again,” said Uichico.
Man-monster Ivan Johnson, who led Talk ‘N Text to the Commissioner’s Cup title last season, is back with the team for his second tour of duty as import. Johnson led the Tropang Texters past the Elasto Painters in a bruising championship series.
Johnson knocked loose the front tooth of Paul Lee and levelled coach Yeng Guiao. Johnson drove into the paint, elbowed Lee in the face knocking loose Lee’s front tooth which clattered to the hardcourt. Johnson ran along the sidelines, went out of bounds and slammed into an unsuspecting Guiao whose back was turned to him.
Talk N Text opens its title defense when it battles Blackwater in the opening playdate of the Commissioner’s Cup on Feb. 10, Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum at 4:15 p.m. The Star Hotshots and the Meralco Bolts battle in the main 7 p.m. main game.
The Tropang Texters, who had an early exit in the All-Filipino conference when they were eliminated in the quarterfinals, are hoping to do better in this conference which they won last season.
