Former Justice Secretary Leila De Lima is not in favor of bringing the death penalty back.
The Senatoriable said that there is no enough basis that crime rate in the country will decline if the government reinstates the death penalty.
According to De Lima, the strengthening of the criminal justice system is the right solution against criminality and not the imposition of the death penalty to criminals.
De Lima added that based on the data of the Commission on Human Rights, most criminals who have been imposed with the death penalty come from the poor sector of society, those who have no money to pay for a private lawyer.
The Senatoriable mentioned that Senator Grace Poe and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s statements, favoring the reinstatement of the death penalty are anti-poor.
