The De La Salle University Green Archers bucked a poor start then pulled away in the second half to post a rousing 86-65 win over University of the Philippines on Saturday, August 23.
La Salle thus regained a share of the lead in the Season 77 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
La Salle’s Almond Vosotros snapped out of a shooting slump as he scored 21 points on 5-of-8 shooting from three-point distance.
The Green Archers thus posted their seventh straight game after losing their first two games of the season. That gave La Salle a share of the lead with arch-rival Ateneo at 7-2 (win-loss).
Jeron Teng added 15 points, Jason Perkins had 13 points and 11 rebounds while Arnold Van Opstal scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds in his return to action after a long layoff because of injury.
La Salle coach Juno Sauler castigated his players for their lack of focus early in the game.
“We can’t afford to start this way especially with the lack of mental concentration,” said Sauler. La Salle held a slim 40-34 lead at the half and protected a slim three-point lead, 44-41, in the third quarter before the Green Archers went on an 11-2 run to start the rout.
The Maroons dropped to a 1-8 win-loss card.
