COMELEC takes action to remove fake news in social media

Commission on Elections

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) made a system to hasten the removal of fake news in social media platforms amidst the campaign period for the mid-term elections in May.

COMELEC spokesperson James Jimenez said that, currently, they are in the process of identifying misleading items particularly in Facebook that they consider ‘problematic’ while the election on May 13 nears.

The poll body has given a white list to social media platforms ‘which will allow them to facilitate our request for actions on questionable and objectionable social media posts’.

Jimenez clarified that the ‘white list’ will not be the only basis for Facebook, and other social media sites, to remove posts but will enable them to act on posts deemed as ‘false news’ by COMELEC.
