The Commission on Elections (Comelec) challenges the 95 listed names that were tagged as ‘nuisance’ candidates to justify themselves before the election officials that they are qualified to run in next year’s midterm polls.
In an interview, Comelec Spokesman James Jimenez addressed that the petition against “nuisance” candidates is not a “kiss of death” for 95 senatorial aspirants. He also added that the challenge should serve as a test if a candidate is capable enough to run for office.
Jimenez justified that the Comelec was tasked only to determine a candidate’s eligibility to run.
The ‘nuisance’ candidates list also includes the names of the Katipunan’s entire 12–man senatorial slate, which represents most of the regions. According to Comelec, the group failed to submit a list of authorized signatories and specimen signatures, a requirement for the candidacy certificates.
The Comelec is set to release its final list of senatorial candidates for 2019 midterm polls before the end of 2018.
