The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas issued a statement that Los Angeles Lakers’ player Jordan Clarkson will not be included in the final line-up of Gilas Pilipinas in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship.
According to the said statement, amid all exhausted efforts done by the heads of SBP, including SBP’s Executive Director Sonny Barrios, who went to Geneva to personally attend to the guidelines set by FIBA, they failed to meet the deadline in submitting all proper documents needed for Clarkson to be able to wear the national jersey in the FIBA Asia.
The LA Lakers has given the go-signal for Clarkson to play as long as there is no conflict with the schedules of the NBA.
With this limitation, Jordan can only participate during the preliminary games of the FIBA Asia. However, Basketball fans should not be dishearten as this certain limitation is only distinct to the FIBA Asia zone.
The management can still appeal to FIBA if they can consider holding the tournament in the same manner as FIBA Americas, Europe, Oceania and Africa. This way, there won’t be any conflict with the calendar of the NBA.
In previous interviews, Clarkson has stated his willingness to play for Gilas Pilipinas and help boost the country’s chances in making it all the way to Rio.
