Another chess player is making a name for himself while carrying the Philippine flag in the Saudi Riyadh international rapid chess championship.
National master Elwin Herbias Retanal won the crown of the recently concluded competition held at Saladin hotel in Saudi Arabia.
The eight-seeded Retanal scored a total of 10 points after 11 rounds to be named the champion.
Top-seed and international master Mohamed Tissir fell prey at the hands of Retanal in the sixth round.
Retanal was dealt his lone loss in the competition after he lost to Gaafar Hassan of Egypt.
Two other Filipinos, Alvin Alcala (fourth) and Aldrin Gallardo (10th) made it to the top ten. (Chris Capulso)
