Cherie Gil wants “Lavinia’s” famous line removed from musical play

Actress Cherie Gil through her lawyer Atty. Lorna Kapunan has sent a Cease and Desist order against the management of Viva Films and Newport Performing Arts, Resorts World Manila last Friday asking the removal of the famous “you’re nothing but a second rate, trying hard copycat” line from the musical play, “Bituing Walang Ningning.”

Gil claims that the said line was her own original concept and that the management should’ve asked her permission first before including it in the said musical.

Gil played the antagonist Lavinia Arguellas in the original movie version of the said musical.

According to Atty. Kapunan, her client claims that she has the intellectual property rights of the said line.

However, well-known director Emmanuel Borlaza negates Gil’s claim.  The veteran director, who’s also a scriptwriter said that the late Orlando Nadres wrote the screenplay but the lines came from the director himself.  Cherie was just superb in delivering those lines.

The veteran director said in an interview that though he’s old now, he still has a clear memory, and that there’s no truth that Gil owns the rights to those lines.

Bituing Walang Ningning is based on the comic novel of Nerissa Cabral, with its main stars, Ms. Sharon Cuneta and Christopher De Leon.

Produced by Viva Films, the movie was shown in 1985.

Bituing Walang Ningning, the musical opened last June 17 at the Newport Performing Arts at the Resort’s World Manila.
