President Benigno Aquino III has put the province of CALABARZON and other areas in Mindanao under a state of calamity after the recommendation of Presidential Assistant on Food Security and Agricultural Modernization Sec. Francis Pangilinan.
Coconut trees in Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, and Basilan have been badly infested by pests.
Based on Executive Order number 169, President Aquino tasked the Philippine Coconut Authority, Philippine National Police, and other government agencies to help in eliminating the pests called “Coconut scale insects”.
Pangilinan said that the pests started attacking the coconut trees since 2010 and spread rapidly in the region.
“Ito’y para mas magkaroon ng maigting na pagkilos ng mga pamahalaang local, ng mga ahensya ng pamahalaan, PNP, Department of Agriculture, at Philippine Coconut Authority para matugunan itong peste,” added the Cabinet Secretary.
If the said problem can’t be contain Pangilinan insisted that more than 33 Billion peso worth of coconuts will be infested by the said pests.
Pangilinan also mentioned that the government will shell out an initial amount of 400 Million pesos for the first three months of the implementation of their solution.
“We cannot defeat this pest if there is no concerted efforts.”
