The Court of Appeals affirms its previous decision to junk the petition of the office of the Solicitor General to acquire Mary Jane Veloso’s statement, who is currently in jail in Indonesia.
The deposition could have been used by Veloso to strengthen her case against her illegal recruiters, Cristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao, both charged with qualified trafficking in persons at the Nueva Ecija Regional Trial Court.
According to the Court of Appeals’ decision, the SolGen’s petition had no merit because under the 1987 Constitution, the accused has the right to face its accusers.
Prior to this, the Nueva Ecija RTC allowed the acquisition of Veloso’s deposition in Indonesia but this was barred by the CA.
Veloso was sentenced to death for smuggling illegal drugs in Indonesia. She was supposed to be prosecuted in 2015, but was spared so that she could testify against her alleged illegal recruiters.
