Bullying in the Philippines

dzrh news bullying

One of the primary causes of suicide is bullying. Unfortunately, the number of suicidal attempts and those who commit suicide has increased over the years.

Last September 6, President Aquino III has signed Republic Act no. 10627 or the Anti-bullying act of 2013,” which prohibits and defines bullying as “Any severe or repeated use by one or more students of a written, verbal or electronic expression, or a physical act or gesture, or any combination thereof, directed at another student that has the effect of actually causing or placing the latter in reasonable fear of physical or emotional harm or damage to his property.”

RA 10627 also entails schools to maintain a public record of relevant information and statistics on bullying incidents with confidentiality.

In our exclusive interview with Rep. Antonio Tinio, one of the authors of the Anti-Bullying Law, he said that to consider something as Bullying, it should be done severely and repeatedly. It should also have a hostile effect on the environment.

Whether it’s physical, verbal or cyber bullying, schools should have their own policies and punishment for those who commit such acts. Bullies will face sanctions and will undergo rehabilitation monitored by the school.  (Acey Gutierrez)
