Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno remains idle on funding the bill granting ‘free tuition’ in state universities and colleges.
During the hearing on the proposed 2018 national budget, yesterday, August 1, Sec. Diokno justified that only six percent of the overall population and graduating students would benefit the said bill.
An estimate of Php 100 billion annual cost would be needed to implement the government’s free college tuition program.
Sec. Diokno explained that the huge investment on the bill would not be good for the economy.
Sec. Diokno also clarified that the proposed budget may not be granted the allocation, but the biggest division of the national budget would still be for basic education.
Meanwhile, the budget on military expenditure for the Armed Forces Philippines and the Philippine National Police has risen from its previous Php 3 billion to Php 4 billion.
