Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Chief Gerald Bantag has tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

“I am confirmed positive,” Bantag said in a text message sent to reporters.

Earlier, BuCor spokesman Gabriel Chaclag announced that he contracted COVID-19 following his test results released on Saturday.

Bantag underwent an RT-PCR test for COVID last week after two of his close-in staff tested positive for virus.

His results were released on Monday, September 21.

In a radio interview, Bantag said he is not confined to a hospital but is staying in his quarters since he is not experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19. He added that does not have any underlying conditions.

The latest data of BuCor showed at least 350 staff contracted COVID-19 while 21 died.
