Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) raised doubts that the Manila Water Company is experiencing water shortage because of El Nino.
BAYAN Sec. Gen. Renato Reyes said that Manila Water might be using the El Niño to cover up their failure and their un-announced water service interruptions, which has caused problems to many of their consumers.
Reyes added that Maynilad Water Services, another water concessionaire, should be experiencing the same problem if it was indeed caused by drought.
However, Maynilad has yet to annouce any possible water shortage, and even insisted that they will be providing 50 million liters of water daily to augment the water supply of Manila Water.
“Parang lumalabas na para pag-takpan yung kahinaan, kakulangan, at hindi mapaliwanag at hindi inanunsyo na service interruption, parang napakadaling sisihin na lang sa El Niño,” Reyes said during DZRH’s Damdaming Bayan.
Reyes even pointed out that the announcement of Manila Water contradicts the statement of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) and other government agencies that there is enough water supply.
The militant leader urged the government, particularly MWSS, to act and have Manila Water clarify the issue.
He also urged the government to hold the water concessionaire accountable if it is proven that the shortage is not caused by a shortage in water but rather a failure in their system.
