Barako Bull Energy big man Liam McMorrow threw his weight around inside the paint, tallying huge numbers of 41 points and 27 rebounds, to power Barako Bull to a hard fought 123-114 victory over GlobalPort Batang Pier in the 2015 Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Sunday, June 7.
Barako Bull (6-1) thus cemented its place at the top of the standings with the victory. Trailing them are the San Miguel Beermen (6-2), the Alaska Aces (5-2) and the Meralco Bolts (4-3).
The other teams include GlobalPort (4-4), the Kia Carnival (3-3), the Star Hotshots (3-4), the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (3-4), the Talk ‘n Text Tropang Texters (3-4), Barangay Ginebra San Miguel (3-5), the NLEX Road Warriors (2-5) and the Blackwater Elite (1-6).
Barako relied on a strong finish, scoring a total of 78 big points in the last two quarters alone, to foil the rally of the Batang Pier. Barako also inched closer to securing a berth in the quarterfinals thus enhancing its chance of of finishing in the top four and getting a twice-to-beat incentive in the next phase.
”I think we did a good job in sticking to our formula which is keeping our positive attitude,” said Barako Bull coach Koy Banal. ”We were down several times in the game but we didn’t give up and kept fighting.”
GlobalPort lost its second game in a row and dropped out of the top four.
With the result of the game hanging in the balance with under eight minutes remaining, Barako Bull detonated a crucial 10-2 run, in the middle of the fourth period to hike their advantage over GlobalPort.
