Ateneo Blue Eagles men’s basketball team coach Tab Baldwin apologized for his recent remarks regarding National University Bulldogs rookie Dave Ildefonso, who previously played for the Ateneo Blue Eaglets.
In a statement on Monday, September 24, Baldwin said that he does not mean to cause displeasure with his comments after the game between the Eagles and the Bulldogs on Saturday, September 22.
The veteran coach explained that he just intended to ‘highlight the competitive nature of recruiting’ with his comments, but admitted that it was unnecessary.
“In the NU post game press conference, I made reference to Dave Ildefonso and his decision to attend NU rather than Ateneo in discussing the recruitment process which we all go through at the university level. In hindsight, my reference to Dave and his decision was entirely unnecessary,” Baldwin said.
“My intent was to highlight the competitive nature of recruiting. I did not mean to cause Dave, his family or the NU team and community any displeasure with my answer. Therefore, to them all, I offer my sincerest apologies,” Baldwin added.
During the post-game press conference at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Cubao on Saturday, Baldwin asked Ildefonso to re-think his decision to leave Ateneo De Manila University.
“Dave as everybody knows is a very valuable recruit for Ateneo, and we ended up not getting him. I think we wanted Dave to rethink that decision, or wonder, perhaps in hindsight, why he made that decision,” Baldwin said in front of reporters.
“We will continue to put performances on the court and hope that recruits take note and think this is the right place to be,” Baldwin added.
