The Ateneo Blue Eagles were successful in winning the championship of the UAAP Season 80 Men’s Senior Basketball Tournament.

After five years of waiting, the Blue Eagles regained the crown by defeating the defending champions De La Salle University Green Archers with a score of 88-86.

During the final game of the Best-of-3 Finals Series at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Cubao last Dec. 3, Finals Most Valuable Player Thirdy Ravena scored 17 points in order to lead Ateneo to victory.

Reigning UAAP MVP Ben Mbala, meanwhile, gave 19 points and 14 rebounds to assist the Archers in their attempt to defend the Men’s Basketball championship.

Ateneo grabbed an early lead after gaining a 10-point advantage during the first quarter. However, La Salle was unfazed and was able to tie the score to 66-66 before the fourth quarter.

During the final 40 seconds of the game, the Archers struggled to grab control of the game from the Eagles, who were leading by two points, but the efforts of La Salle was not enough as Ateneo took home their ninth championship in the UAAP Men’s Basketball tournament.

The Eagles last won the UAAP Men’s Basketball championship in 2012.
