The Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles completed a sweep of the elimination round of the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball tournament after beating the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 86-64, on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Ange Kouame finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds while SJ Belangel added 14 points for the victory of the Blue Eagles.
Ateneo never looked back after turning a 24-25 deficit into a 43-27 lead using a 19-2 scoring run with 1:13 left in the first half of the game.
By winning all 14 of their games in the elimination phase, the Blue Eagles sealed an outright ticket to the best of three finals series.
Kobe Paras scored 13 points while Bright Akhuetie and Javi Gomez de Liano each registered 11 points for the Fighting Maroons that now have a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinals due to being the second seeded team at the end of the eliminations.
The UP squad will face the winner of the knock-out game between the Far Eastern University Tamaraws and the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers for a place in the finals.
Since the Final Four era of the UAAP, only three teams, including UST in 1993 and the University of the East Red Warriors in 2007, have managed to win all their games in the elimination round.
