As rivalry heats up, La Salle keeps Ateneo winless in last six games between two teams

The De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers on Saturday, April 13, salvaged a semifinals spot at the women’s volleyball tournament of the UAAP Season 81.

The defending champions gained their 11th straight postseason appearance by beating their rivals Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) Lady Eagles in three straight sets, 25-17, 25-13, 25-13, at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon.

Earlier in the season, the girls from Taft Ave., also won their first game for the current volleyball season against the girls from Katipunan.

This is the second season that the reigning volleyball champions completed a sweep of their games against the lady eagles.

DLSU’s victory on Saturday also marked the sixth straight game the lady spikers won against the arch-rivals’ lady eagles, stretching up to the finals of the UAAP season 79 Women’s Volleyball tournament.

UAAP Season 79

The Lady Eagles, led by Julia Morando and Michelle Morente were favored to win the women’s volleyball title during the said season after being pitted against the Lady Spikers, headlined by Kim Fajardo and Dawn Macandili, in the finals of the tournament. The reason was mostly due to Ateneo completing a sweep against La Salle during the elimination round of the tournament. The Eagles won against the Spikers during their first meeting in the season,  24-26, 24-26, 25-21, 17-25, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. The Katipunan based squad continued their winning streak against their rivals from Taft by winning in their second meeting, 12-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19, in the season.

However, La Salle finally avenged their loss at the hands of Ateneo after winning Game-1 of the Best-of-Three Finals Series, 26–24, 26–24, 21–25, 25–17. In Game-2, the Eagles failed to redeem their Game-1 loss as the Spikers won the match, 12–25, 25–20, 25–21, 25–19, to defend their title.

The Taft-based team then wrapped up their campaign in the elimination round by dominating the team from Katipunan in three straight sets, 26-24, 25-17, 25-19. The two teams did not meet in the Finals since Ateneo got eliminated in the semifinals by the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws.
