Gilas Pilipinas failed to end the first round of the 2019 FIBA World Cup with a win after losing to Angola, 84-81, in a game that reached overtime on Wednesday, September 4, at the Foshan International Sports and Cultural Arena in China.
Valdelicio Joaquim scored 20 points while Yanick Moreira finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds for Angola to seize their first victory in the ongoing basketball tournament.
After trailing behind by 12 points at most, 61-49, a three-pointer from Roger Pogoy allowed the Filipinos to take the lead, 67-65, in the fourth quarter. However, Carlos Morais, who finished with 11 points, made back-to-baskets to bring Angola back up, 73-70.
CJ Perez scored a three-pointer to tie the score 73-all, with 33 seconds left in regulation. The PBA rookie had a chance to end the game in the fourth period with a win for the Philippines but his long-range shot failed to hit its mark.
In the extra five minutes, Gilas Pilipinas immediately took the lead, 73-76, before missed baskets allowed Angola to seize control of the game, 78-76, and from there the African team never looked back.
Kiefer Ravena had the chance to once again tie the score and bring the game to another overtime but his three-point attempt hit the backboard and bounced away from the ring.
Andray Blatche registered 23 points and 12 rebounds for Gilas Pilipinas, who has yet to secure their first win in the tournament. Perez finished with 17 points and fellow PBA rookie Robert Bolick added 10 points to pace the national team.
While already out of contention for a podium finish in the 18th Basketball World Cup, the Philippine team will still have at least two more games in the competition in order to decide their ranking.
