Alab Pilipinas managed to grab the lead in the Best-Of-Five Finals series of the 8th ASEAN Basketball League after defeating the Mono Vampires of Thailand, 143-130.
During Game One on April 22 in Sta. Rosa Multipurpose Complex, Laguna, Justin Brownlee, who registered 46 points and 11 rebounds, proved pivotal for the home team’s victory.
Alab was trailing by four points, 116-120, with less than 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter but a three pointer from the American import closed the point deficit to one.
However, former PBA import Michael Singletary, who scored 42 points throughout the game, made a succesful free throw to widen the lead of the Vampires to two, 121-119.
The fifth foul of Thai team’s center Samuel Deguara gave Brownlee a chance to tie the game after being granted two free throws.
While Brownlee missed both shots and the putback attempt after getting the rebound, Renaldo Balkman, who finished with 39 points and 15 rebounds, secured the ball and successfully tied the score 121-121 in order to force the game to an overtime.
With Deguara already fouled-out of the game, the Philippine team started the extra regulation with an 8-point run, 129-121, which allowed them to dominate the extra period
Game-2 is once again set in Laguna on April 25, and Alab will be attempting to secure their second win in the Finals series.
