7-year old leads Rizal contingent at upcoming chess tournament in Marikina

7-year old Al-Basher “Basty” Buto

A seven-year old chess wonder will lead the contingent of Rizal Province for the 2017 Cluster Meet Chess Tournament in Marikina City on December.

Grade-2 Filipino Chess star Al Basher ‘Basty’ Buto from Cainta, Rizal will be playing in the top board of the elementary Boy’s Division

He will be joined by Mark Joseph Barbosa who will be playing in board 2.

Buto became famous after winning five of the 83 gold medals of the Philippines during the 18th Association of Southeast Asian Nations Age Group Chess Championships that was held in Malaysia last November 26 to December 3.

Buto also won a silver medal during the said tournament.

Other members of the province’s contingent include Cielo Hernandez, and Irish Gelua who will be playing in the Elementary Girl’s Division; Kenneth Gelua, and Chester Niel Reyes who will be playing in the High School Boys division; and Rohanisah Buto and Janna Ledj Barcenas, who will be playing in the  High School Girls division.
