Seven members of the Boracay Dragon Boat team died on the morning of Wednesday, September 25 after their boat capsized in the waters of Malay, Aklan.

According to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), 14 other members of the said team were rescued and were immediately rushed to the Saint Gabriel Hospital for treatment.

PCG Spokesman Captain Armand Balilo said in a statement that there were 21 members of the Boracay Dragon Boat Team onboard the boat. It added that strong waves had caused the boat to sank off in the waters of Sitio Lingganay in Barangay Manoc-Manoc at 7:40 AM early this morning.

Balilo said that they will withhold the names of the fatalities — 3 women and 4 men for 24 hours, or until their families are notified of their untimely death. He said 7 of the survivors are women, including a Chinese and a Russian, while the 7 others are men.

Reports said that the team was about to practice for an upcoming international competition.

In a statement, the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation extended their sympathies on the death of the said dragon boat paddlers.
