After a year the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) faction of Nur Misuari almost took over Zamboanga City, the city government on Monday gave thanks and commended military forces for defending the city.
The Zamboanga City government posted photos on Twitter of the celebration despite the rains.
Mayor Isabelle “Beng” Climaco-Salazar led the presentation of the commendations to security forces who helped defend the city.
The city government said this marked the city’s “unity in defense of the flag one year after the siege.”
On September 9, 2013, forces of the MNLF tried to take over Zamboanga City, which led to a four-week firefight between the government and the MNLF.
Thousands of residents were displaced and left homeless after the MNLF burned and grounded houses.
