The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers sealed a spot to the semifinals of the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball tournament after beating the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 81-71, on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.
This season’s Most Valuable Player Soulemane Chabi Yo registered 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers, the fourth seeded team at the eliminations, to knock out the Tamaraws, the third seeded team.
UST immediately took control of the game after taking an 11-point lead, 15-4, early in the first quarter.
The España based squad remained dominant throughout the first half as they ended the second quarter with a 26-point advantage, 54-28.
However, the Tamaraws did not go down without a fight and trimmed the deficit down to five points, 70-65, with more than six minutes left in the game.
Less than a minute left in the clock, FEU still had to overcome a seven-point gap, 78-71, in order to stage a comeback but free throws from Zachary Huang and Brent Paraiso brought the lead of UST back to double digits and ended the game.
The Tigers are now preparing for their match against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, which has a twice to beat advantage. The game is scheduled this coming Sunday, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
