US pays up Tubbataha reef fiasco


The US government has agreed to pay the damages it cause in the Tubbataha reef when its US minesweeper skidded last January, 2013.

This was assured by Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario at the Senate’s budget hearing this afternoon.

According to Del Rosario, the US government has agreed to pay 87 Million pesos for the rehabilitation of the area where its vessel skidded.

On January 17, 2013, the USS Guardian skidded at the south atoll of the Tubbataha reef damaging more than 2,300 square meters of reef.

The Tubbataha reef has been declared as a world heritage site in Palawan and is the center of diving destinations in the world.
