The Philippine National Boy’s Basketball team, also known as Batang Gilas, has secured a slot in the quarterfinals of the FIBA Under-18 Asian Championships in Thailand.
Batang Gilas topped Group B after defeating China, 73-63, and going undefeated in the preliminary round.
The 18 points of Sean Dave Ildefonso along with the 13 points and 14 rebounds of AJ Edu carried the Batang Gilas to their third straight win in the tournament
Dalph Panopio also gave 12 points, while Kai Sotto and Miguel Oczon each finished with 11 points for the national team, who led by 18 points, 51-33, during the game.
The Philippine team was down by three points, 15-18, during the end of the first quarter, but they recovered in the second quarter and was leading by four points, 31-27, by the end of the period.
With 2:21 seconds left in the clock, a 12-point run allowed the Chinese team to get the score close to 65-59, but it was not enough to seize the victory from Batang Gilas.
