Communications Undersecretary Lorraine Marie Badoy on Wednesday took up the cudgels for President Rodrigo Duterte, claiming that the top peddler of fake news was not the chief executive but Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV.
“Hindi totoo ‘yan. Bigay sila ng example, baka maniwala pa ko. Pero hindi totoo ‘yan, kasi madali lang namang magsabi ng kung anu-ano [It’s not true. They should give an example and I might believe them. But it’s not true because it’s easy to say baseless claims],” Badoy said during an interview with DZRH, in reaction to critics, who were claiming that the President was the top peddler of false information, especially in social media.
“In fact, the President is the proponent of freedom of expression…Pag nakausap mo s’ya, importante sa kanya na hindi kayo nakikialam sa kalayaan ng iba na mag-express ng sarili [I f you’d have the chance to talk to him, you’d see that it’s very important for him not to meddle with the freedom of others to express themselves],” added the undersecretary, who is under the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) headed by Secretary Martin Andanar.
If there’s anyone who spreads fake news right now, it is Trillanes and not Duterte, according to Badoy.
“Si Senator Trillanes kasi nag-iikot s’ya…s’ya ang fake news, sa kanya nanggagaling, marami s’yang sinabi… [It’s Senator Trillanes, he’s the one doing the rounds…he’s the source of fake news, he’s saying many things],” she said.
The PCOO official claimed the lawmaker went to Chicago and spread false information there that Davao, where Duterte became mayor for over two decades, is the most dangerous city in the Philippines.
“(That) is so wrong…because Davao is in fact a world-renowned city, the most livable, safest city…It’s a preposterous claim,” said Badoy.
She belied Trillanes’ claim that based on data from the Philippine National Police (PNP), Davao has the most number of recorded murder cases and is second in the number of reported rape incidents.
“Sinabi n’ya pa na galing ‘yan sa [He said that it came from the] hard statistics (of the) PNP (but in the) PNP’s recent statistics, (the) number one (in) murder (is) NCR (National Capital Region), number 2 is Region IV-A (Calabarzon) and Davao is nowhere near the top whatever of this list,” said Badoy.
