Supreme Court calls for oral argument on EDCA

Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno

The Supreme Court is set to call for an oral argument regarding the legality of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement.

During her meeting with the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines Forum at the Marco Polo Hotel in Ortigas, Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno said that the Highest Court will immediately issue a ruling regarding the said agreement after hearing the arguments of both parties.

The EDCA supposedly strengthened the relationship between the Philippines and the US through its Mutual Defense Treaty and the Visiting Forces Agreement.

Some of the petitioners against EDCA include former Senator Rene Saguisag and Wigberto Tanada.  The two were part of the 12 Senators who voted to oust the US Military bases in the country in 1991.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice Sereno refused to comment on the killing of the transgender in Olongapo City, as the case is part of the VFA provisions.
