The Supreme Court approved President Rodrigo Duterte’s declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao.

Majority of the magistrates expressed support for Presidential Proclamation 216 which implements Martial Law all over Mindanao.

11 magistrates favored Proclamation 216 while three magistrates believe that the coverage of the Martial Law should be limited.

Only Associate Justice Marvic Leonen opposed the Martial Law declaration.

During a press conference this July 4, Supreme Court Spokesperson Theodore Te said that the magistrates are convinced that there is sufficient factual basis for the President to declare Martial Law.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court dismissed the consolidated petitions filed by Opposition lawmakers, and militant groups.

Duterte implemented Martial Law in Mindanao last May 23 after the Maute Terror group attacked Marawi City, Lanao Del Sur.
