SMB survives late rally of TNT to tie Finals series 2-2

San Miguel Beer fended of a late resurgence by the Talk N’ Text Katropa to win, 106-101, in the Game Four of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals on Sunday, August 11, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

Chris Mccullough finished with 27 points and 22 rebounds for the Beermen to tie the Best of Seven Finals Series. Alex Cabagnot added 25 points and June Mar Fajardo also contributed 22 points for the team’s victory.

San Miguel started the fourth period with a 15 point lead, 84-69, before back-to-back baskets from Katropa’s Brian Heruela, Terrence Jones, and Troy Rosario trimmed the deficit to a single digit, 84-76.

Two straight jump shots from Terrence Romeo stopped the leakage and brought the lead of the Beermen back to double digits, 88-76.

With less than a minute left in the game, charities from Jones allowed Talk N’ Text to cut the point difference to two, 98-96, before a lay-up from Fajardo and two free throws from Cabagnot gave a six point lead, 102-96, to San Miguel with 16 seconds left in the game clock.

A lay-up from Jones brought the lead of the Beermen down to three, 104-101, before Chris Ross sealed his team’s victory with another set of free throws.

Jones, who was named Best Import of the Conference before the game, led the Katropa with 32 and 16 rebounds while Rosario added 24 points, 12 of which came from outside the arc, to pace Talk N’ Text.

Game five of the Finals’ series is scheduled on Aug. 14, Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
