The Senate’s finance committee on Tuesday, September 11 already approved the proposed budget for 2019 of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR). The commission’s proposed P689.706 million budget for 2019 will now move to the plenary for deliberations.
CHR Commissioner Karen Gomez Dumpit said that they are grateful for the support of the senators – including Senators Panfilo Lacson, Gringo Honasan, and Senate President Tito Sotto, among others.
She also added that the “comments and pieces of advice are well taken and the commission will continue to endeavor to work to the best of our abilities pursuant to our constitutional mandate.”
In 2018, the House initially only approved a Php1,000 budget for the CHR but was eventually restored after receving cricitism from different stakeholders.
Meanwhile, President Rodrigo Duterte and his allies have consistently threatened CHR over its stance against the killings under the government’s violent war on drugs.
