San Miguel beats Magnolia in Game-7 to complete five-peat

The San Miguel Beermen won their fifth straight Philippine Cup title by defeating Magnolia Hotshots Pambansang Manok 72-71 on Wednesday, May 15, at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

Alex Cabagnot scored 18 points, including the fade-away two-pointer that put San Miguel up by one with 57 seconds left in the game.

Finals Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo registered 17 points and 31 rebounds while Arwind Santos contributed 17 points and 11 rebounds for San Miguel to recover after trailing behind by 17 points at most during the game.

The Hotshots seized a 13 point advantage, 25-38, at the end of first half of the game after limiting the Beer to five points in the second quarter.

However, the Beermen slowly chipped away the point gap before a lay-up from Santos allowing the defending champions to grab the lead, 62-61, from the Hotshots in the fourth quarter.

In the final two minutes, a two point shot from Sangalang put the Hotshots up by one, 70-71, before Cabagnot responded with his fade-away jumper to bring the lead back to the Beer.

Jio Jalalon, who contributed eight points and six assists, had several chances to give the victory to the Hotshots in the waning seconds of game but he all his shots missed their mark.

Ian Sangalang registered 18 points, while Rafi Reavis and Paul Lee each added 11 points to pace the Hotshots.
