The supposed increase in premium contributions for active members of the Social Security System starting this May is illegal.

Senate President Protempore Franklin Drilon said that under Section 4 of the Republic Act 8282, it is prohibited for the SSS to increase its premium rates for active members just so they can increase benefits, including the already approved Php1,000 pension hike.

According to Drilon, it is clearly stated in the Constitution that any increase in the benefits for SSS pensioners should not be shouldered by the current SSS contributors.

Drilon added that the increase in premium contribution will only be allowed if this is being recommended by the Board and approved by the President.

The veteran senator said that President Rodrigo Duterte’s concern to SSS pensioners is commendable but not at the expense of the active SSS members.
