Despite repeated announcement that no talks of human rights violations would be tackled, President Rodrigo Duterte and United State President Donald Trump still took time to partially tackle the topic.
During the two leaders’ bilateral meeting on Monday, the issue on human rights could not help but be addressed after venturing into the Philippines’ controversial war on drugs.
According to White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, President Trump and President Duterte’s meeting centered on topics such as the terrorist threats by the Islamic State extremist, illegal drugs, trade, and partially spoke about human rights violation.
However, during the press briefing with Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, he said that no talks about human rights were tackled between the two leaders.
According to Roque, Trump seemingly sympathized with the administration’s illegal drug campaign since he frequently nodded as Duterte explained the country’s battle against drugs.
The American President has yet to give any statement on his official position on the drug war.
