President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday stated that he will certify as “urgent bill” the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression Equality (SOGIE) bill.
During an event for the newly elected officials of the Malacanang press corps inside the Palace, President Duterte said that the LGBTQIA+ community has longed been waiting for him to certify the said bill as an urgent bill.
According to the president, he plans on certifying the said bill because he really wants the members of the third sex to be happy.
The SOGIE bill became controversial after an incident wherein Gretchen Diez, a transgender was prohibited from entering a women’s bathroom in one of the malls in Quezon City. She was even handcuffed and allegedly ridiculed because of her gender preference.
Meanwhile, if the President is somehow on board on the proposed SOGIE bill, Philippine National Police Chief Dir. Gen. Oscar Albayalde thinks that there is no need for such bill.
When asked to comment regarding the said matter, Albayalde said that “we are all protected by no less than the Constitution.”
Albayalde said that we cannot create laws that are just tailor-fit for certain groups and or individuals. If this will be the case, Albayalde then said that will he be allowed to demand for a law that will protect bald people like him from being humiliated and ridiculed?
The PNP chief added that Sen. Nancy Binay made a valid point when she said that what we need is a more “universal” anti-discrimination bill.
