PLDT Home Ultera feasted on Navy’s token net defense and cruised to a 25-14, 25-22, 25-14 romp to clinch the first semifinal berth while Perpetual Help stayed in the semis hunt with a victory over Baguio in the Shakey’s V-League Season 12-Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan City Thursday, April 23.
The Ultra Fast Spikers, who have toppled some of the league’s toughest teams, proved too strong for the Lady Sailors, whom they clobbered with 37 attacks and frustrated with eight blocks with 10 aces to boot to annex the 64-minute victory, their fifth straight in the season-opening conference of the league sponsored by Shakey’s.
So poor was the Lady Sailors net defense that they failed to score even a single block out of 28 tries.
Jaja Santiago, the league’s top blocker, topscored for PLDT with 11 hits, including three blocks, as regular hitters Alyssa Valdez, Sue Roces and Laurence Ann Latigay slowed down with eight points apiece while playing on limited minutes.
Gretchel Soltones, the other top PLDT spiker, chipped in six points in a one-set stint as coach Roger Gorayeb tried out new combinations as they go for a sweep of the elims against Meralco and Fourbees-Perpetual on Sunday and Tuesday, respectively.
Hezzymie Acuna, Lou Oserio and Jolina Labiano fired six hits each for Navy, which produced 28 kills but just couldn’t stop the Fast Spikers’ attacks upfront. The Lady Sailors dropped to joint fifth at 2-3 in a tie with the Lady Altas.
Earlier, Perpetual Help held off Baguio in a tightly-fought third set and pounded a 25-20, 25-20, 27-25 victory to stay in the race for the last semifinal berth.
Jamel Suyat fired 16 hits and skipper Ana Diocareza and Marijo Medalla combined for 23 points as the Lady Altas subdued the Summer Spikers to improve to 2-3 heading to the last five playdates of the single round robin elims of the league presented by PLDT Home Ultera and backed by Mikasa and Accel.
Baguio, led by Mae Madulid’s 12 hits, slid to 1-5.
Meanwhlie, the Perpetual-Baguio clash will be shown on GMA News TV Channel 11 starting at 1 p.m. today with the PLDT-Navy faceoff to be aired Monday, according to the organizing Sports Vision.
