The Department of Agriculture has estimated that about Php 189 million worth of agricultural products have been damaged by the recent volcanic activities of Mt. Mayon in Albay.
During DZRH’s One On One, DA Sec. Manny Pinol said that the said numbers are based on the report sent by the agency’s regional office.
However, Pinol believes that the rice paddies affected by the ash spewed by the active volcano can still be used, but the vegetables will no longer be salvageable.
“There is a possibility na yung mga palayan na tinamaan ng abo, makakarecover pa. Kapag umulan lang matatanggal yung abo sa mga dahon ng palay, makaka-recover pa. Ang hindi lang makaka-recover ay gulayan.” Pinol said.
Meanwhile, the Agriculture official also revealed that they have prepared 10,000 boxes of seeds for the 6,000 hectares of agricutural land ravaged due to the crisis caused by Mt. Mayon.
“Yung binhi natin naka-ready na.” Pinol further added. “6,000 hectares plus yung tinamaan pero ang naka-ubang natin na binhi ay 10,000 boxes.”
On January 28, Pinol joined President Rodrigo Duterte in visiting the province of Albay in order to assess the situation caused by the volcanic activities of Mt. Mayon.
The DA secretary also revealed that affected farmers could avail of the initial Php 5,000 emergency loan for their basic needs and their families.
