PHL swimmer gives country its first Asian para-games gold medal

Davao City native Ernie Gawilan won the first gold medal of the Philippines in the whole history of the Asian Para Games.

Gawilan, who was born without legs and an incomplete arm, ruled the men’s 200m individual medley SM7 event of the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The 27-year old swimmer finished within 2:52.43 to defeat second-placer Chen Liang Da of Chinese – Taipei (2:55.90), and third placer Jadhav Suyash Narayan of India (2:56.51) during the race that happened at the Gelora Bung Karno Aquatic Stadium in Jakart

Aside from the gold medal, Gawilan also seized a silver medal during the men’s 50 m freestyle S7 after clocking 31.93s.

Achelle Guion also won a silver medal in the women’s 45kg powerlifting event, and swimmer Gary Bejino grabbed the bronze medal in the men’s 100m backstroke for the Philippines that currently ranks fifth among the 43 countries participating in the multi-sports event.
