Filipinas won the gold medal in the 2019 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women’s Challenge Cup of Asia Division 1 on Saturday, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates after beating the host team, 2-1.
Bianca Cuevas scored the first goal of the Philippine national women’s hockey team, 1-0, with less than a minute into the finals. Danielle Imperial then doubled the lead of the Philippines, 2-0, seconds before the end of the second period.
Dana Alhosani scored the lone goal for the UAE team in the 56th minute.
The Philippine representatives, coached by Carl Montano, also defeated India, 5-0, and Kuwait, 10-0, en route to the gold medal match of the tournament.
Cuevas, who registered five goals in the team’s three games and teammate Kayla Herbolario, who had four goals, led the top scorers of the tournament that ran from April 14 – 19.
Due to their victory, the Pinays are moving up to the top division.
