PHL Girls’ team grabs gold in World Juniors Tennis Championships Asia-Oceania qualifiers

Team Under-14 Philippine Girls team dominated Japan, 2-0, on Saturday, April 13, to take home gold medals from the 2019 World Juniors Tennis Championships Asia-Oceania Qualifying tournament in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Alexa Milliam defeated Sakaya Ishii, 6-2, 7-5, and Alex Eala won over Mio Mushika, 6-0, 6-3, for the Philippines to secure the title.

En route to the finals, the Philippine squad composed of Eala, Milliam and Jen Prulla prevailed over South Korea in the semifinals and Hong Kong in the quarterfinals. They also won against the representatives from Sri Lanka, Indonesia and New Zealand.

Aside from winning the qualifiers. the Philippine team, coached by former national team member Czarina Mae Arevalo, also secured a slot in the World Juniors Championships in August in Prostejov, Czech Republic.

Only the top four teams in the Asia-Oceania Qualifiers grabbed a spot in the upcoming tournament arranged by the International Tennis Federation.

This is the first time since 1993 that a team from the Philippines qualified to the World Juniors Championships, where the best 16 national girls’ and boys’ tennis teams face one another.

Aside from the Philippines, South Korea, Japan and China will also represent the Asia-Oceania region in the World Juniors Championships.
