The Philippine National Men’s Football team, also known as the Philippine Azkals started their campaign at the 2018 ASEAN Football (AFF) Federation Suzuki Cup by defeating Singapore, 1-0, at Panaad Stadium, Bacolod on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
Patrick Reichelt delivered the sole goal in the 74th minute needed for the Azkals to seize their first victory under coach Sven Goran Eriksson, and to give the Singaporean team their first defeat after two games in the tournament also called the AFF Championship.
During the first half, the Philippines made several attempts to score against the Singaporean team but the tight defense of the visitors held true until the end of the 45th minute.
In the previous 2016 Suzuki Cup, Philippines and Singapore faced one another twice but both games ended with either team scoring a goal. They also failed to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament.
The Azkals now prepare to face Timor Leste on Saturday, Nov. 18, at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, before returning to the Philippines for their match against Thailand on Nov. 21.
The Azkals will wrap up the group phase of the tournament with a game against Indonesia at the latter’s home country on Nov. 25.
The Philippines need to secure the top two slots in their group in order to qualify to the semi-finals.
