Veteran sports analyst Atty. Ed Tolentino expects the upcoming 12-round bout between Filipino boxing idol Manny Pacquiao and undefeated American boxer Keith Thurman will end in the 10th round.
In an interview with DZRH on Wednesday, July 17, Tolentino predicts that Thurman will go toe-to-toe with Pacquiao since both fighters started out as ‘sluggers’.
“Kasi itong Thurman, hindi katulad ni Adrien Broner yung nakalaban ni Pacquiao noong huli na takbo lang ng takbo. Itong si Thurman tumatakbo rin pero siya parang Pacquiao din, nag-simula as a slugger and naging boxer lately,” the analyst explained during DZRH’s Happy Hour.
“There will come a point in time that the slugger in him will be resurrected at sa tingin ko sasabay ito kay Manny at mas magiging magandang laban ito,” he added.
Tolentino also believes that experience gives the 40-year old Pacquiao an advantage in the fight against his slower 30-year old opponent.
Furthermore, he mentioned that Thurman recently went in an almost 2-year hiatus from his boxing career due to multiple injuries. Meanwhile, the only severe injury that Pacquiao had in his 24 years of boxing is the tear in his right shoulder in 2015 that cost him the fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“Yung laban na ito, this is only the second fight of Thurman after two year of inactivity. Matagal na hindi lumaban itong si Thurman,” Tolentino said.
“Maaring 30 years old lang siya but one of the reasons that he was inactive is because he suffered several injuries…Hindi katulad ni Pacquiao, except doon sa shoulder injury kay Mayweather, okay naman siya,” Tolentino explained.
Pacquiao and Thurman will face one another in the boxing ring on Saturday, July 20, at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States of America.
They will fight for the WBA (Super) welterweight title, currently held by Thurman.
